Working as a fashion photographer, my team and I spend most of our days dialing in the look and feel of how our client’s new collections will appear online. Unlike other forms of photography, e-commerce fashion is a style of photography whose main purpose is to present fashion apparel items on website product pages, that showcases the items for sale and influences customers reactions. For these images to be displayed properly there are many factors that come into play. For example, color accuracy, and clarity help the customer see the product in its best light, and allows them to view the item in multiple angles.

VSP Studios, located in Miami’s Buena Vista district, has recently moved into a new 3000 sq ft facility with studios built out to handle on model photography and ghost mannequin and product photography. When shooting e-commerce in the studio,  the most common background used is a clean white background or “255 White” due to how it helps the items stand out when being viewed on product page listings. Although some collection styles look best on this bright white background, some look better on softer tones. For example, organic fabrics such as cotton, silk or wool, tend to look better on grey or neutral “off white” tones. For the Heiress photoshoot, we decided to go in a new direction. Our thoughts were “new collection…new set direction” and this is where we collaborated to created the v-shaped corner set. This allowed us to stay with the white tone background, but offered a more textured, shadowed type of presentation. After our first test shot, we all looked the images and knew we had found the right formula to present the new collection items.

The next step was to cast the model. Im always in touch with agents who represent the best of the best, and I wanted to get someone new for this shoot. I spoke to my top contact at Elite Models Miami - Paolo Buonfante, and he showed me a new model coming in from overseas. I knew she was the one the second I saw her. I realized I saw her walking the runway at Miami Swim Week, and was very impressed. When I heard she was heading back to Miami and available, I quickly suggested to Hailey that I had found he ideal model to use for this shoot.

Israel born, Naomi Koch, rose to stardom as a result of viral videos and photographs circulating on social media, but it was the allure of her hourglass figure, beautiful appearance, and talent in front of the camera that helped to get her top booking status with Elite. Coming all the way from Israel to the US, we were very fortunate to be the first studio to book her when she arrived in Miami. When Naomi is not working as a model, she works as a pilates and Barre instructor and is studying to be a naturopathic student. Beauty and brains makes for a great combination. Deciding how the background will appear on your product page images is a key decision.


To get started, its important to decide if you need studio white background sets, or lifestyle location imagery. In many cases you will need both to build out your web store. The white background images are an industry staple, and is often times executed with what we call RGB 255 “bright white” or what an off-white tone that doesn’t take away any attention from the garments. Be sure to consult with your web designer, or the person you have running your Shopify template, as the way the photos will be seen on your site is critical. Some collection styles look better on bright white background, and some on softer low key tones. Organic fabrics tend to show better on the neutral white or even grey tones. Sometimes you may even want to add color to your site. These are best for banners and sliders to dress up your website.

Using color backgrounds for the product listing can at times, complicate the customers ability to see the apparel item in its truest color rendition. Paper roll backdrops are easy to buy from local art supply stores, and now you can even use the latest in RGB LED lights. These amazing new lights can be dialed in to any color you want and makes for some nice creative images of the models wearing your new collections. We just installed new Aputure LED lights in the main studio, and have seen great results.

Most of the major department stores use some form of white to off-white or grey/neutral tone, which doesn’t compete with what the model is wearing. Color accuracy is always an important part of the equation, as a high percentage of returns come from customers receiving their items, only to find out that the color is not exactly what they were hoping for. Its not good business when that red jacket shows up at the customers door, and is actually a light fuchsia. Attention to details during the digital capture process takes skill and eye for how colors should look.

Our most popular lighting setups include 255 White and Off-White. The 255 White background will give you a extremely bright, clean look to compliment your clothing. This lighting setup is extremely popular for most of our clients. This lighting setup is the standard when marketing your clothing on large commercial websites including Amazon, Target, Walmart, etc. These big commercial sites require your photos to use this bright lighting setup. If you are planning on using your photos for your own website, Shopify or a smaller commercial site, you may consider using the off-white lighting setup. This lighting appears to be a light grey and can be changed to a warmer or cooler white, depending on your preference. This background color is beneficial for those brands who have lighter colored clothing and can help those colors pop better. This lighting is helpful is you want to create a more muted, comforting tone to your website.

Some brands like to use lifestyle location imagery for their product page listings. Depending on the style of clothing you are selling and the audience you are selling to, this can make sense. Doing some testing on your site to see how you customers respond is the key to making this decision on how to present your collection items.

1st step is to organize the collection items that you will be sending us. Please include a return shipping label and a detailed shot list. The shot list can include notes such as, what model will wear what garments, style numbers, color codes, etc. This list is crucial to ensure our VSP Team keeps everything organized. Be sure to include a contact person who will be available the day of the photoshoot to answer any questions we may have while we are on set with the models. That way we can message you for approvals, as we go. Ensuring quality control means having good commutations back to the designer or merchandise manager.

2nd step is to contact our studio manager, and confirm you order details. This is best achieved by filling out an order form request and submitting HERE. Some orders are more involved than others, so be sure to set up a call with us, after you have reviewed all the notes sent back to you from your inquiry. All the rates, payment options, and time lines will be explained in our response back to you. We generally respond back no later than 24 hours after inquiries are sent, but in the busy holiday season we can be delayed at times. If emails are not working for you or you are on the go, you can always text us to confirm your order. We know how demanding the fashion industry can be for brand owners, and designers, so we do all we can to streamline the process for you. We will show you all the model options we have for in-house bookings, and for location lifestyle sets as well.

3rd step. Send us the tracking number for your incoming package(s) and delivery date via text or email, so we can confirm your package arrival. Once we received the package, we will begin to prep for the shoot. Your clothing will be steamed, organized and inspected to ensure we have everything required and all the art direction notes are clear. We organize your items, so that we can maximize your photo shoot production timelines.

After the photoshoot is completed, we will begin processing hi-resolution images with the proper color settings to ensure clean, consistent images. All the images are captured in RAW format, and are processed, and exported via Capture One software. Your images will then be sent to you via shared Dropbox folder and can be delivered as JPEG, PNG, or TIF, PSD formats. These high resolution images are what your web team will need to build out commercial website platforms, such as Amazon, Shopify and Walmart. We work with retailer and wholesalers, from small boutique brands to large department stores.

4th step. Look through all the images loaded to your Dropbox folder, and start making your selections. You will need a front, side, back, and possibly a detailed view of each item, so you can build out your product page listings. You can also select images to be used for banners, sliders or promotional marketing. We don’t charge by the number of images taken, so you will have many images to choose from and we offer all the views you need. With all these images you have to work with, you will have plenty to use to populate your Google Business Profile. This is something we highly recommend, and will consult you on how best to utilize this free feature that Google provides to all business looking to better their SEO positions. Need retouching? 5th step. Now that you have all the content that you ordered, we will ask that you pay the balance due of your invoice. Once the balance of the invoice has been paid off, we will send you back your items with the return label. Please remember that you are responsible for providing us a paid return shipping label, otherwise we will have to charge extra for this. As the owner of VSP Studios, my crew and I create fashion lifestyle campaigns, marking editorials, and e-commerce website content for wholesalers and retailers of the fashion industry. Helping our clients present their new apparel collections is our goal, and now we have moved into what we call on-model product page 360 videos.

As fashion sellers try to find the best way to attract, maintain, and raise their conversion rates, videos have emerged as the weapon of choice. By placing short play videos of 10 to 15 seconds on their product page listings, online sellers are finding greater success with offering short play videos of a model showcasing the apparel items. These videos appear as one of the thumbnail options, and are also very organic SEO friendly. The videos offer the customers a way to see the garment moving, how it fits on a real body, and becomes more relatable by delivering content in a way that they are used to. Lets face it, we live in a TikTok world and portrait mode, full screen videos are the way to deliver this fashion content. Users today are very accustomed to story postings, reels, and pretty much all the platforms we use have a video feed of some sort. These same videos have a dual purpose for apparel sellers, as they have rich new content that can be used on social media, as promotions, special announcements, or when they want to boost traffic to a specific collection item. These “French fry delivery” 360 spin videos attract shoppers to click, and dive deeper into the shopping experience. Video content, also allows for more dynamic analytics options for the marketing campaigns can be more effective and get more bang for the buck.

Last year, towards the end of the pandemic closure times, I was contacted by the e-commercre marketing team from Lascana. This fashion brand is owned by the Otto Group (GmbH & Co KG) which is based in Germany, and is one of the world's biggest e-commerce companies on the planet. Based in Hamburg, but with offices in Jacksonville, Florida they operate in more than twenty countries. Anyone in the fashion game today, knows this German based company carries a giant volume of apparel and fashion accessories every year. Being able to work with them would be an amazing opportunity for VSP, and I was excited to show them what we could do.

Their e-commerce team was interested in speaking to VSP Studios about how we were developing these new “product page based videos” specifically formatted for selling and marketing fashion apparel. This was something that I had been working on for quite some time. Using the proper camera, lens, and lighting, and finding the right formula was the trick. After many trail and error attempts, I felt like I finally had the VSP video work flow and gear in place, but there was something missing. What would I be using for my main light?

Looking to updagrde my lighting set up, and find a solution where I can shoot both photos, and videos, I found my way over to Parabolix.com. Having the right modifier is a key to achieving the right lighting that shows off the apparel properly and the new Para 55 was the right choice. Just big enough to cover the entire head to toe of a model standing on set, and with a focusable lighting rod option to dial in as needed. Looking for something more intense and contrasty? Use the focusing rod to adjust the light inward. Looking for a softer light? Focus the light back away from the modifier. I felt like this adjustable capability was going to be the way to deliver the light onto the model. Now all I needed was the right light to go with my new Para 55.

I placed my order for the parabolic modifier, and after speaking to the owner David, he had me sold on buying the entire Parabolix system, which included the amazing QUAD BOOM. This boom arm goes onto my studio crank-roller stand and is the ideal way to use these giant para modifiers. With the lighting head placed on the end of the focusing rod, it makes more sense to have a properly designed boom arm to control the lighting system in a busy fashion studio environment. The design of this boom is made for studio photographer who need to lower or raise the light to dial in as they shoot from set to set.

Once we started talking, David took a look at VSPstudios.net and saw what we do here in Miami. He mentioned that he may have the light I’m looking for to go along with my new para modifier and boom arm. I, of course, was very interested in hearing what he had in mind. I have searched for everything and found the same issues that other content creators have encountered. There are great powerful lights in panel or COB form factors with many good lighting options available, but always an issue of color accuracy and consistency. There was also the fact that I needed something different, so I could achieve a signature VSP look and style. Which is something I am always looking for. David went on to tell me that he was shipping me a prototype LED light that was designed especially to be used with the para modifiers. A cylindrical shaped LED light source with a high CRI, that is capable of putting out enough power to use in my fashion photography work flow.

Being able to shoot the photos as quickly, and seamlessly as possible, shoot a 360 spin video was the ultimate goal. That way I could maintain the amount of content that my clients require me to create each work day. Getting images up on my client’s websites quickly allows them to start selling. Providing color accuracy on the videos would also play a big part of the process, as all online sellers want to cut down on returns due to the color or fit not being right. The videos allow a way to present the product in a way that speaks to these 2 key issues. Being able to deliver high end video content that helps my customers be more efficient in the selling process was my goal when I first began to delvelope the product page video work flow model for VSP Studios.

After testing the new prototype LED light, dialing in the camera system, and post production process, I was ready give it a real world test with a video shoot for Lascana.com. The model was Kia Archer from Elite Models Miami, and the clothing would be a new Spring collection that was soon to go on market. When something great is achieved, it’s never just one thing that makes it. It’s truly a combination of all the elements coming together, and this was just the case. The new lighting set up with the all new OMNI LED LIGHT gave me the ability to keep the color accuracy on point and I could clearly see the difference in the overall quality of the light. The skin tones and fabric details were looking better than ever. I used the Par 55 and I also used a large “strip bank” soft box style, modifier.

This new LED light fixture was the difference maker I was looking for, so I could dial in the Lascana video content with the right color and tonality. The more I used this light video sets, the more I found it was also allowing me to shoot photos with the same color accuracy. A seamless photo to video photoshoot work flow, allows my team to shoot many items per day, and keep up with the high demand of a our fashion clientele. This new style of content creation where the photo and video work together to present the item for sale is the new norm. In the coming holiday season, you will be seeing more websites offering e-commerce based video content on their listings.

I shot the entire 2 days out on location with the new Canon R5, and I have to tell you how amazing this new mirrorless camera system is. It was so windy that models could only last outside for a short time. Utilizing the IBIS, along with the insane level of focusing capability at shallow apertures, I was able to battle the wind hand-held. The 85mm 1.2 and the 50 mm 1.2 were the ideal lenses to get some amazing images and not fall overboard. My assistant Sophia was right behind me with her wide-angle lens, and she nailed it! So happy with how it all turned out. She also made sure our gear didn’t fly away. Thank you to all the amazing cast and crew at MTV Siesta Key.

MTV’S SIESTA KEY

Siesta Key is located off the coast of Florida and is known for its magnificent beaches. The show follows young adults and captures heart-wrenching moments of confronting disputes of love, heartbreak, and the emerging issues that come with adulthood. All while spending glorious, never-ending summers in their hometown of Siesta Key Beach, Florida. Where better to shoot an MTV's reality series and launch a swimwear collection than the sandy beaches of their home town Siesta Key? Such a beautiful beach and boating community just 1 hour south of Tampa.

Juliette Porter, the lead character of MTV reality series Siesta Key, and designer Jaymi Washburn teamed up to create a sexy, modern swimwear collection. Trend Studio Bali's boutique factory, a female-owned apparel business located in Bali, was the driving force behind the brand. As if trending and versatile swimsuits aren't enough, JMP the label is constantly developing a workflow to lower its carbon footprint. For instance, their up-cycled and recycled materials are used in part to create chic swimwear items. Using the proper techniques and industry knowledge, JMP reduces textile waste and decreases its carbon footprint. Moreover, the brand owners have developed reusable packaging that is very resourceful for carrying wet bathing suits or beach accessories.


BEHIND THE SCENES

Alongside them is the excellent hair and makeup team Juliet and Jaymi. Helping JMP The Label come to life on set were Eri Vincent, Cheyanne Clark, model Allison Mason, Celine Farach, Nicole Ashley, and fellow cast members Chloe Trautman, Brandon Gomes, and Amanda Marie Miller.

On the second shoot day, the swimwear collection was photographed on a private beach backyard scene in Siesta Key. The house was right on the edge of the most beautiful white sand beach blue water with rock formations seen in the area. Later that day, models, crew, and cast members boarded a yacht at Marina Jack in Sarasota. The goal was to capture the best golden hour images while the boat serves as the backdrop, along with the beautiful setting sun in the west.




Victor captured models Allison, Celine, Nicole, cast members Chloe, Brendan, Juliette Porter, and boyfriend Sam Logan enjoying the yacht and representing the JMP Label swimwear collection. MTV filmed Victor and the crew navigating through the boat and shooting in different scenes. High winds coming in from the gulf made for a challenge holding all the cameras steady and managing the model's hair, but the results speak for themselves. Great job to all who were a part of this production!
